New Center Enhances Campus, Connecting Athletic Buildings

On college campuses, the challenge with an expansion project is always the same: how to grow in ways that enhance your physical footprint, not distract from what you already have. Villanova University’s new Andrew J. Talley Athletic Center is a striking model of this principle in action, a cutting-edge strength and conditioning center that ties together several existing buildings, all of which were built at different times to serve different functions. The design prioritizes harmony, tying together diverse spaces into a cohesive whole while addressing the University’s expanding needs for student-athlete performance and wellness.

Named for a beloved football coach, the building includes “The Howie Long Strength & Conditioning Training Center,” sports medicine operations, and a new football locker room. It also features coaches’ offices, an equipment room, academic support spaces, a 100-seat meeting room, and a reception/training table area. Positioned alongside the football field, its curved design provides an inspiring backdrop and a grand entrance for the team, and the signature architectural statement of the project. The complex integrates a network of existing buildings that were all constructed at different floor levels, including the current basketball arena, the Villanova Swim Complex, and Alumni Gym, the legendary original home of Villanova basketball.

A Design Honoring Villanova's Achievements and Future in Athletics

“With this design, we were able to create something new that was equally important to the many projects that preceded it,” explained lead architect Darin Jellison. “Villanova is a world-class university with a shining athletic program. And now they have a complex that celebrates all they have built.”
