This existing house offered a modern home with room for children to visit. The renovations were designed to eliminate the 80’s feel of the home. The use of materials and color on the exterior accentuate individual areas, breaking up the mass of the house. The interior rooms are defined yet flow easily together through the use of color, the placement of the walls and large expanses of glass.
The homeowners desired a retreat as well as a place for entertainment. The design created juxtaposition between modern elements and the historic fabric of the existing structure. Renovations are consistent with the historic home; wood plank ceilings and beams were added and crown molding used is based on historic trim details. In contrast, stairs, lighting and furniture are contemporary, as is the open plan treatment of the main living space.
The client wanted to create a more dramatic entrance and foyer to modernize the look of their split-level home. An exterior addition was constructed at the entrance and interior renovations made to create a visual connection from the foyer to the family room and upstairs hallway. Attic space was converted into an office. Windows were replaced and insulation was added to increase the energy efficiency of the home.
This home was designed in the spirit of the Pennsylvania carriage house. The interior spaces are formally defined, yet are open to one another allowing for a consistent flow that is not found in older homes. The interior detail features consist of simple shapes and molding profiles reminiscent of working buildings, mixed with formal fireplaces and paneling in selected areas throughout the house.
Renovations consisted of the removal, replacement and enlargement of an existing garage to accommodate a new in-law suite. Exterior siding was replaced with a combination of fiber cement panels and siding. Windows were replaced with new expanded modern windows. A two story glass storefront system with a steel and mahogany trellis defines entry to the home, including new flooring and lighting within. Interior work centered on a reconfigured kitchen.
