The revitalization of the 1100 block of Chestnut Street took a major step forward with the news that The Collins, an adaptive re-use project more than four years in the making, has been certified as LEED SILVER by the U.S. Green Building Council.  The Collins is one of Philadelphia’s newest mixed-use high rises and brings three stories of retail and four stories of luxury apartments to the Midtown Village neighborhood that continues to grow.  Beyond the sustainability features that gained the LEED certification, the client wanted Blackney Hayes Architects to restore the existing Oppenhiem Collins’ limestone façade and adapt the existing building to be the aesthetic and physical anchor for the entire project.  Sustainable design features of the project include three green roof areas over 5,000 square feet, a stormwater cistern inside the building, high efficiency plumbing fixtures with reduced water usage, and reflective white roof membranes to stop the absorption of solar energy.
