Ground breaking took place last week on three historic buildings along Market Street in Wilmington that will be repurposed for 76 new apartment units. The Buccini/Pollin Group and BPGS Construction “broke ground” at 838 Market Street on Thursday to kick off the development effort, which city managers hope will help revitalize the downtown area. The Market Street Village project –near the DCCA and the Grand Opera House — is welcome news to public officials and the residents who will inhabit the unique residences, which were designed by Blackney Hayes Architects. Most apartments have already been claimed by charter school educators, and the City hopes these young professionals will help downtown Wilmington become a 24-hour vibrant community. The ceremony included a performance by the East Side Charter School String Ensemble.
Just about every official at the press conference heaped praise on the Buccini /Pollin group, who has maintained their vision of uplifting the downtown and Riverfront areas of Wilmington. “Thank you for continuing to invest in our City and helping us realize our goals,” said Jeff Flynn, director of economic development for Wilmington. “You continue to amaze us, taking complex projects and making them a reality. There are few that can do what your team does,” added Flynn.
